Bid on a pair of tickets to the October showing of 9 Parts of Desire at the Presentation House Theatre and a gift certificate towards a dinner for two at Pasparos Taverna.

Betsy Warland Writer’s Retreat at Annie’s Acre
in Nanoose Bay

Bid on admission to the upcoming (Sept 17th, 18th, 19th) writer’s retreat with Betsy Warland at Annie’s Acre Bed and Breakfast in Nanoose Bay.

In this weekend retreat entitled “Revision: -scaping the poem” you will learn, and apply, three strategies for guiding you in crafting a poem’s final revisions. These “-scaping” strategies will assess how you have: located the reader; positioned the narrator’s voice; scored the poem’s inherent movement. The development of a “third” ear through the act of reading a poem aloud will inform this approach to revision. Poets who work in individual poems, suites of poems or manuscripts are a welcome to attend.

Betsy Warland is the director of, and on faculty at, The Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University. She has published ten books of poetry, creative nonfiction, and lyric prose. Her decade-long writing project, Breathing the Page: Reading the Act of Writing, will be published in 2010.

Bidding on a limited special edition of Red: A Haida Manga by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, published by Douglas & McIntyre.

An innovative and breathtaking graphic novel, Red is the tale of a Haida hero, his rage, and his quest for retribution. Referencing a classic Haida oral narrative, this full-colour graphic novel tells the story of Red, a leader consumed by his lust for revenge who blindly pushes his community to the brink of war and destruction.

Red blends traditional Haida imagery into a Japanese manga–styled story. Tragic and timeless, it is reminiscent of Oedipus Rex, Macbeth, and King Lear.
