BC Book Prize Submissions Again Surpass Record

Thanks to an unprecedented level of participation by BC’s writing and publishing community, the West Coast Book Prize Society is pleased to announce that the BC Book Prizes received a record number of entries this year: 336.

This high submission level is the continuation of a trend, a 30% jump from the level of submissions five years ago. The number of submissions has increased each year but one over the past five years.

All of these submissions are now with the judges and five finalists will be announced March 12, 2009 for each of the following prizes:

  • Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize
  • Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize
  • Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize
  • Hubert Evans Non-fiction Prize
  • Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize
  • Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize
  • BC Booksellers’ Choice Award in Honour of Bill Duthie

On April 18, the start of BC Book & Magazine Week, the recipient of the 2009 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence will be announced. This award was established in 2003 by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo to recognize British Columbia writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the province. In 2008, the fifth annual award was presented to Gary Geddes by BC’s new Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Steven L. Point, OBC.

Winners of the 25th Annual BC Book Prizes in the seven categories listed above will be announced on Saturday, April 25th at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prizes Gala at the Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel in Vancouver, marking the end of BC Book & Magazine Week. Between April 11 and 24, several of the finalists will tour, reading to audiences in various communities around BC.
