From two west coast islands come two award-winning authors: Brian Brett and Audrey Thomas. The Robson Reading Series will host this internationally acclaimed duo on May 27th at 7pm at the UBC Bookstore/Library at Robson Square for readings and conversation.
Brian Brett is “a bold thinker and a tough yet lyrical writer,” says Ronald Wright. Brian Brett is the author of two memoirs and several books of poetry and fiction. His journalism has appeared in major Canadian newspapers. His most recent memoir, Trauma Farm: A Rebel History of Rural Life (Greystone/D&M, 2009), is an irreverent and illuminating journey through a day in the life of the affectionately named Trauma Farm, with numerous side trips into the natural history of farming. It has been named a top 100 book for 2009 by Amazon, the Globe and Mail and the Times Literary Supplement. It has also won both the Writers’ Trust of Canada Non-Fiction Prize and the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award. Brett lives on Salt Spring Island.
“Page for page, [Audrey Thomas] is one of the country’s best writers,” says Margaret Atwood. Audrey Thomas has published 16 books of fiction and written over 20 plays. She has received many honours including: the Writers Trust of Canada Matt Cohen Award, the W.O. Mitchell Prize, the Canada-Australia Literary Prize, the Marian Engel Award and three Ethel Wilson Fiction Prizes. Her most recent last novel, Tattycoram (Goose Lane, 2005) takes readers into the distant fictional world of Charles Dickens’s England, where, in an unusual twist, Dickens interacts with his own characters, allowing Thomas to raise questions about the intersection of life and art. A native New Yorker, Thomas has lived on Canada’s west coast since 1959 and currently calls Gabriola Island home.
Admission is free and refreshments are served. Books will be available for purchase and signing. More information at the Robson Reading Series website.
