Congratulations to the CBA Libris Award Shortlist

The Canadian Booksellers Association celebrates the “Best in the Business”, and the Libris Awards are voted on by members of the book industry. The Shortlist was announced April 22, and the winners will be announced on June 20, 2009. We’d like to extend our congratulations to all those shortlisted for the 2009 awards, especially those representing BC!

  • Steven Galloway’s novel, The Cellist of Sarajevo (Knopf Canada) is up for Fiction Book of the Year
  • Andrew Nikiforuk’s book, Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent (Greystone Books) is up for the Non-Fiction Book of the Year
  • UBC Bookstore in Vancouver is shortlisted for the Campus Bookseller of the Year
  • Raincoast Books / Book Express, located in Vancouver, are up for Distributor of the Year
  • Two Vancouver bookstores are up for Specialty Bookseller of the Year: Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium and Vancouver Kidsbooks

Elise Partridge at the Robson Reading Series

Did you miss Elise Partridge while she was on tour with the BC Book Prizes? Well good news! Elise Partridge and David O Meara will be celebrating National Poetry Month at the Robson Reading Series. BC Book and Magazine Week 2009

The BC Book Prize Soirée served as an evening kick off to BC Book and Magazine Week. There are lots of author events going on around the province, including Magazine Cabarets and Literary Tours.

A Verse Map of Vancouver book launch

A Verse Map of Vancouver, published by Anvil Press, will be having a free, public launch this Tuesday. Ninety-two poets have contributed to this beautiful full-colour anthology edited by George McWhirter, Vancouver’s Inaugural Poet Laureate.

The event will take place Tuesday April 21, 2009 from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Alice MacKay Room at VPL’s Central Library Branch at 350 West Georgia Street.

Vancouver’s Poet Laureate holds a two-year honourary position administered by a partnership of the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Public Library and the Vancouver International Writers Festival. The position is funded by a generous donation by Dr. Yosef Wosk and held by the Vancouver Foundation. A new Laureate will be announced this spring.

Terry Glavin receives the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence was established in 2003 by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo. It is meant to recognize British Columbia writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the Province.

Our formal congratulations to author, journalist. editor, and educator, Terry Glavin for your amazing contributions to BC culture. He has “an extraordinarily holistic vision that … shows us a world where culture and nature, human aspiration, natural beauty, language, history and social justice are inextricably intertwined.” according to this year’s jury members.

Terry Glavin lives in Victoria and is an adjunct professor of creative writing at the University of British Columbia. His most recent book is Waiting for the Macaws and Other Stories from the Age of Extinctions and he is very well known for his Transmontanus Series with New Star Books. Terry Glavin is a frequent contributor to various newspapers and magazines, and his column for The Tyee, Dissent, appears twice monthly.

Steven Galloway & Mary Novik at the North Shore Writers Festival

The North Shore Writers Festival 2009 occurs during BC Book and Magazine Week with free readings by Canadian authors. The tenth annual festival includes readings by Steven Galloway, whose novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, is shortlisted for this year’s Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Steven will be at the West Vancouver Memorial Library on Monday, April 20th at 7:00pm.

And if that wasn’t enough to delight you, Mary Novik, winner of the 2008 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, is the North Shore Writers Festival “Writer in Residence”. Margaret Horsfield & Friends of the Archives

On Sunday, April 19th, 2009, Join Margaret Horsfield as she talks to the Friends of the Archives at the BC Archives in Victoria. The lecture will feature the results of research done in the B.C. Archives (particularly the Dawley papers) and at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon - all of which resulted in Voices from the Sound: Chronicles of the Clayoquot Sound and Tofino 1899–1929 which has been nominated for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize. Spring Book Hatching by CWILL

Spring Book Hatching 2009 is an afternoon of brand new book introductions by BC authors and illustrators. Hosted by CWILL (Children’s Writers and Illustrators of BC), and supported by the BC Coalition for School Libraries, Kidsbooks, and the Vancouver Public Library, there will be activities, tons of prizes and the chance to meet your favourite BC author or illustrator. Orca Book Launch this Thursday

A Book Launch of Orca Book authors will be held at Kids Books on Broadway Thursday, April 16, 7:00. Authors launching their new books are Caroline Adderson (winner of the 2004 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize), K.L. Denman, Christy Goerzen, Melanie Jackson, Diane Tullson, and James Heneghan. James, who was shortlisted for the 2007 Sheila Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, will be launching Bank Job which he co-wrote with Norma Charles, shortlisted for the 2002 Sheila Egoff Prize.

Northern Tour Kicks Off
