Alcuin Book Design Awards 2008

The Alcuin Society has announced the winners of its 27th annual Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. Of an astounding 233 entries, the judges selected 32 winning titles. You can view the full PDF list of winners and finalists here. Congratulations to all the Canadian titles recognized by The Alcuin Society’s Awards for Excellence in Book Design. The BC Book Prizes is proud to highlight a few titles and individuals here which have also been involved with the BC Book Prizes:

  • In the category of Prose Non-Fiction Illustrated, Robert Bringhurst (Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize winner 2008) won first place for design of The Surface of Meaning : Books and Book Design in Canada, by Robert Bringhurst (CCSP Press / Simon Fraser University).
  • And in fourth place of the Prose Non-Fiction Illustrated category is Jessica Sullivan, designer of Flight of the Hummingbird: a Parable for the Environment, by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (Greystone Books), which has also been shortlisted for the BC Booksellers’ Choice Award in Honour of Bill Duthie 2009.
  • Designer Andrew Steeves at Gaspereau Press was awarded Second Prize in the Poetry category for his work on The Muska Assemblage (Gaspereau Press) by Don McKay. Don McKay was the winner of the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize in 2007.
  • Andrew Steeves at Gaspearu Press was also awarded Second Prize for the Prose Fiction category for his design of That Tune Clutches My Heart by Paul Headrick (Gaspereau Press). That Tune Clutches My Heart is shortlisted for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize this year.

The Alcuin Society is a Vancouver-based not-for-profit society for the support and appreciation of fine books. In addition to the annual Book Design Competition, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, Amphora, and organizes lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and field visits on various aspects of the book.

Three BC Book Prize-nominated poets — George Stanley, Nilofar Shidmehr, and Daphne Marlatt — have accepted an invitation from writer-in-residence John Asfour to read at Historic Joy Kogawa House on Monday, April 20, as part of BC Book and Magazine Week.

100-Mile Diet meets Reality TV

Six brave families from Mission, BC volunteered to take part in the 100-mile diet challenge as part of a new six-part series on Food Network Canada.

The 100-Mile Diet, winner of the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize in 2008, was written by James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith. “Throughout The 100 Mile Challenge, James and Alisa provide the families with expert information, tips, encouragement, corrections, and a series of challenges.”

The 100 Mile Challenge website on FoodTV.ca is amazing; filled with webisodes, meal planners, tips and information! Want to challenge yourself to the 100-Mile diet? You can sign up on FoodTV.ca and track your progress!

Airs on Sunday, April 5 at 1 pm and 8 pm ET / 10 am and 5 pm PT

Eight Authors On Tour

We wish we could take every finalist author on tour, and it was a very hard decision…. but the authors have been confirmed for the 6th annual BC Book Prizes On Tour! Joining us from April 13-18 across Northern BC are Margaret Horsfield, Katarina Jovanovic, Elise Partridge, and Robin Stevenson. And touring throughout the Kootenays and Okanagan from April 19-24 will be Stephen Bown, Karen Hofmann, Andreas Schroeder, and Rex Weyler.

Andrew Nikiforuk in the Northwest

Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, shortlisted for the BC Booksellers Choice Award in Honour of Bill Duthie, is currently on tour.

He is in Seattle, WA on Monday, Portland, OR on Tuesday, and Bellingham, WA on Wednesday. Visit D&M Events for more details.

Lee Henderson and Andreas Schroeder at Robson Reading Series

Please join the Robson Reading Series this Thursday when local novelists Lee Henderson and Andreas Schroeder read from their latest work, both finalists for The BC Book Prizes Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize.

Lee and Andreas will be reading on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at 7 p.m. at the UBC Library/Bookstore at Robson Square (plaza level). Admission is free, coffee and tea will be served, and the audience will have an opportunity to ask the authors questions about their books and writing following the reading.

The Robson Reading Series is a free, multi-genre reading series that features some of the finest writers from Canada and abroad. Events are organized by the UBC Library and the UBC Bookstore, and sponsored in part by the Canada Council. For a list of upcoming events, visit Robson Reading Series or Robson Square Author Events.
