Congratulations Governor General’s Literary Awards 2009 Finalists

Our wholehearted congratulations to all BC-nominated publishers and authors! It is fantastic to see such a strong representation of British Columbia as part of the Governor General’s Literary Awards.

Several of the authors have also been part of the BC Book Prizes, such as Annabel Lyon (2005 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize finalist), David Zieroth (1999 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize winner), Shelley Hrdlitschka (2005 Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize finalist), and Robin Stevenson (2009 Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize finalist).

View the full list of 2009 finalists for the Governor General’s Literary Award. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in Montreal.

BC Book Prize Finalists Featured at The 6th Annual Summer Dream Literary Arts Festival

The 6th Annual Summer Dream Literary Arts Festival is being held August 19 to 29, 2009. The festival will feature readings from finalists Rita Wong (Forage, Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize 2008) and George McWhirter (Cage, Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize 1988, and The Incorrection, Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize 2008).

Daphne Marlatt at “The Line Has Shattered” Symposium

Daphne Marlatt, winner of the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, will be at “The Line Has Shattered” on August 14th, 2009 at SFU Harbour Centre.
The symposium brings together writers who were present for the Vancouver 1963 Poetry Conference, including George Bowering and Maria Hindmarch, for readings and discussions centred on the event, which has been refered to as a “defining moment in the history of North American poetry”. The event will be moderated and hosted by Stephen Collis.

New Transmontanus Book for Terry Glavin

Transmontanus, the long running series from New Star books, has announced a new addition to the collection. Terry Glavin, winner of this year’s LG Award from Literary Excellence and editor of the series, will be working with Colleen Kimmett on a book about the legendary Sasquatch. Look for it Fall 2010.

Andrew Nikiforuk is the first Canadian to win Rachel Carson Environment Book Award

Huge congratulations to Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent (Greystone Books) for winning the prestigious Rachel Carson Environment Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) in the United States.

Order of Canada Given to Jack Hodgins

On July 2nd, Jack Hodgins, winner of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence in 2006, was award the Order of Canada. Congratulations to Jack on recieving this prestigious distinction!

Whistler Readers & Writers Festival

The eighth annual Whistler Readers and Writers Festival will take place September 11-13, 2009.

More than twenty invited Canadian authors and editors will descend on Whistler this fall as special guests in a weekend-long siege of word-wielding and poetry-slinging. Don’t miss 2009 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize winner Lee Henderson (The Man Game), Claire Mulligan (2008 finalist), and Annabel Lyon (2005 finalist) all reading together on Opening Night! Other BC Book Prize recipients participating include Nancy Lee (2003 finalist) and Wayne Grady (2005 finalist) as one of the Writers in Residence!

Congrats Andrew Nikiforuk

Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent by Andrew Nikiforuk (Greystone Books) has been nominated for the prestigious Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment. The award is given jointly by the University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting and the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.
