Sylvia Olsen receives more literary honors and helps First Nations students find their voices

Sylvia Olsen’s Counting On Hope has won the third annual Bolen Books Children’s Book Prize at an awards gala in Victoria on October 13. Counting on Hope was a finalist for the 2010 Sheila Eggoff Children’s Literature Prize. Congratulations Sylvia!

Jennifer Tieche, the teacher-librarian at Carson Graham Secondary School, welcomed Sylvia Olsen to the Carson Library as Writer-in-Residence from January to June 2010. Hear Our Voices: An Aboriginal Youth Anthology is the culmination of five months of community building, creative telling, and writing by 36 First Nations students from Carson Graham and Balmoral Secondary Schools. Ultimately, this project provided a safe and nurturing environment for this community of young writers to examine their culture and their individual and collective identities while engaging in ongoing literacy development. You can order a copy of the Hear Our Voices anthology by contacting Carson Graham’s librarian, Jennifer Tieche, at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Hear Our Voices was made possible by ArtsStarts in Schools, the City of North Vancouver, and North Vancouver School District 44. Check out this incredible article in the North Shore Outlook where the students discuss how writing changed their lives. Some of the students also had the opportunity to read from their works at The Word On The Street Vancouver.

ArtStarts in Schools currently has a Hear Our Voices exhibition which includes First Nations art and a copy of the anthology. The artwork was created by youth working with Aboriginal artists from communities around BC.
