Vancouverites hail Helen Potrebenko’s classic Taxi!
35 years after Taxi! first revved up Vancouver literature, join us to celebrate this fine novel. Taxi!, published by Lazara Press, is a novel about a woman and a worker in a city. Our city, your city, your literature.
“In the 1970s and ’80s, Helen Potrebenko was a cherished and important Vancouver writer, well known for her early writing in Pedestal, Canada’s first women’s-liberation newspaper, and for her numerous books that included short stories, novels, poems and plays. Hers was the significant working-class urban feminist voice.” — Anakana Schofield, The Globe and Mail.
A diverse group of local writers will read excerpts and offer contributions, including Annabel Lyon, Clint Burnham, Julianne Okot Bitek, Penny Goldsmith, Marina Roy, Michael Turner, Anakana Schofield and Cúán Isamu. There will also be a Q&A with Helen Potrebenko.

On Tuesday, April 20 at 8:00 pm, Spoken INK (presented by the Burnaby Writers’ Society) will welcome Burnaby poets David Zieroth (finalist for the 2010 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and author of seven other books) and Rob Taylor (splattered earth, Child of Saturday and Lyric). This is the first Spoken INK event at their new location at La Fontana Café (101 - 3701 East Hastings at Boundary).
Also, from 5:30-7:30 on April 20, Brown’s Books (across the street from La Fontana) will be offering a 20% discount for all customers who mention they’ll be heading over to La Fontana for Spoken INK.

The North Shore Writers Festival is happening April 19-22, 2010. The 11th annual festival is brought to you by North Shore public libraries, the Friends of the Libraries, and the North Shore News.

Real Vancouver Writers Series at the W2 Culture + Media House
Located at 112 West Hastings Street across from the refurbished Woodwards Building in Downtown Vancouver, the Real Vancouver Writers Series consists of 4 weekly events showcasing local Vancouver writers, publishers and creative literary artists. These events will occur every Wednesday during February beginning at 7pm. These evenings are designed to show the city and the world real and diverse Vancouver culture and real creative individuals in the literary and publishing communities at a time when the eyes of the world are on our city.

BOOK LOVERS CAN RELAX THEIR BODY WHILE STIMULATING THEIR MIND AT THE FIRST ANNUAL GALIANO LITERARY FESTIVAL
Book lovers looking to soothe spirit and soul while escaping Vancouver’s Olympic check points and traffic snarls have another option in the peaceful and beautiful Southern Gulf Islands.
The first annual Galiano Literary Festival will be held February 19 to 21st, 2010, offering more than 25 vibrant Western Canadian voices and a gorgeous weekend away at Vancouver’s closest Gulf Island.
The Festival will get underway with an intimate welcoming reception on the evening of Friday, February 19th, 2010. Throughout the weekend, festival-goers will have the opportunity to meet a variety of writers from the Gulf Islands and across British Columbia in an intimate and casual setting. While the Festival schedule will be stimulating, visitors can anticipate having a few quiet hours to walk along Galiano Island’s beautiful beaches and serene forests.
Throughout the weekend, the Festival schedule includes readings and talks by over 25 writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry including John Barton, George Bowering, Norma Charles, Sean Cranbury, Dede Crane, Anthony Dalton, William Deverell, Ann Eriksson, Jenn Farrell, Pam Freir, Bill Gaston, Gary Geddes, Kim Goldberg, Margaret Griffiths, Geoff Inverarity, Michael Kenyon, Francis Mansbridge, Teresa McWhirter, Catherine Owen, Jamie Reid, Linda L. Richards, Timothy Taylor, Audrey Thomas, Harry Thurston, Rhea Tregebov, Alan Twigg, Gudrun Will, Rhonda Ganz, Mike Christie and George Sipos.
A full slate of workshops and panels will discuss a wide variety of book and writing-related topics including how to develop a writing style, how to get published, and the future of the printed page in the e-book age. All of this will occur in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere where visitors will be able to talk one-to-one with writers and fellow book lovers, or just sit back and enjoy the conversation.
The Festival will take place at the Galiano Inn, a world-class resort that will provide a relaxed and cozy atmosphere. Festival organizers anticipate an intimate and vibrant event.
The Galiano Inn is just a very short walk from the ferry dock and Galiano Island Books, so visitors coming to the Island for the Festival can leave cars at home or at the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen.
Registration for the weekend is $150.00 per person, which includes the opening reception, admission to all sessions, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
Festival-goers may choose to attend for a single day. The cost for one day’s Festival events, including lunch, is $85.00 or $40 for the morning session, without lunch.
Attendees are also welcome to join the authors on Saturday evening for dinner and conversation. The dinner is $25.00 per person (excluding beverages).

The eighth annual Whistler Readers and Writers Festival will take place September 11-13, 2009.
More than twenty invited Canadian authors and editors will descend on Whistler this fall as special guests in a weekend-long siege of word-wielding and poetry-slinging. A number of BC Book Prize nominated (and winning) authors will be attending the Denman Island Readers & Writers Festival this year from July 13-19, 2009.
Hosted by CBC’s Mark Forsythe, some of the writers include Steven Galloway (2009 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize finalist), Jack Hodgins (winner of the 2006 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence), Gabor Maté (winner of the 2009 Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize), Mary Novik (winner of the 2008 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize), Harold Rhenisch (finalist in 2007 and 2001), and Ronald Wright (finalist for the 2009 Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize).

A Notable Night of Poetry and Prose: Novelist Paul Headrick and poet Robert Bringhurst will be reading at the UBC Bookstore at Robson Square this Thursday, May 28 at 7:00pm. Admission is free. Visit the Robson Reading Series Event Page for more information.
Paul Headrick, finalist for the 2009 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, teaches literature and creative writing at Langara College. His fiction and creative non-fiction have been published in many journals, including The Malahat Review, The Antigonish Review, Image, and The Vincent Brothers Review. His charming first novel, That Tune Clutches My Heart (Gaspereau Press), explores the nature of us-and-them conflicts, told through the experiences of May Sutherland, a 1948 high school student caught between warring factions of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby fans.
Robert Bringhurst, recipient of the 2005 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence, is a poet, prose writer, typographer and linguist. His manual The Elements of Typographic Style (Hartley and Marks) has been translated into ten languages and is now one of the world’s most influential texts on typographic design. Bringhurst’s latest book, Selected Poems (Gaspereau Press), brings together selections from several of his collections of poetry and a series of new poems, “The Living.”
