Daphne Marlatt will be reading from her book of prose-poetry, Steveston, on Wednesday, May 6, to a soundscape composed and performed by Robert Minden and Carla Hallett

As Marlatt recalls, “There was something in Steveston which drew us, over and over again, and which our work attempted to enunciate — something under the backwater quiet, the river hum of comings and goings, the traffic of work, that was ‘shouting’ at us to tell it.”

Margaret Horsfield will be conducting a Walking History Tour in conjunction with the Old Cemeteries Society of Victoria. They conduct a Walking History Tour every Sunday afternoon, and on May 3, 2009, Margaret will be doing a tour of Ross Bay cemetery at 2:00pm.
She will be talking about the characters of her book, Voices from the Sound: Chronicles of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino 1899–1929. Meet at 1:45pm, in front of Starbucks Coffee, Fairfield Plaza. $5 - no reservations needed. More details at the Old Cemeteries Society of Victoria events page.

The BC Book Prize Soirée served as an evening kick off to BC Book and Magazine Week. There are lots of author events going on around the province, including Magazine Cabarets and Literary Tours.

A Verse Map of Vancouver, published by Anvil Press, will be having a free, public launch this Tuesday. Ninety-two poets have contributed to this beautiful full-colour anthology edited by George McWhirter, Vancouver’s Inaugural Poet Laureate.
The event will take place Tuesday April 21, 2009 from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Alice MacKay Room at VPL’s Central Library Branch at 350 West Georgia Street.
Vancouver’s Poet Laureate holds a two-year honourary position administered by a partnership of the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Public Library and the Vancouver International Writers Festival. The position is funded by a generous donation by Dr. Yosef Wosk and held by the Vancouver Foundation. A new Laureate will be announced this spring.

The North Shore Writers Festival 2009 occurs during BC Book and Magazine Week with free readings by Canadian authors. The tenth annual festival includes readings by Steven Galloway, whose novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, is shortlisted for this year’s Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Steven will be at the West Vancouver Memorial Library on Monday, April 20th at 7:00pm.
And if that wasn’t enough to delight you, Mary Novik, winner of the 2008 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, is the North Shore Writers Festival “Writer in Residence”. On Sunday, April 19th, 2009, Join Margaret Horsfield as she talks to the Friends of the Archives at the BC Archives in Victoria. The lecture will feature the results of research done in the B.C. Archives (particularly the Dawley papers) and at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon - all of which resulted in Voices from the Sound: Chronicles of the Clayoquot Sound and Tofino 1899–1929 which has been nominated for the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize. A Book Launch of Orca Book authors will be held at Kids Books on Broadway Thursday, April 16, 7:00. Authors launching their new books are Caroline Adderson (winner of the 2004 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize), K.L. Denman, Christy Goerzen, Melanie Jackson, Diane Tullson, and James Heneghan. James, who was shortlisted for the 2007 Sheila Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, will be launching Bank Job which he co-wrote with Norma Charles, shortlisted for the 2002 Sheila Egoff Prize.

Three BC Book Prize-nominated poets — George Stanley, Nilofar Shidmehr, and Daphne Marlatt — have accepted an invitation from writer-in-residence John Asfour to read at Historic Joy Kogawa House on Monday, April 20, as part of BC Book and Magazine Week.
